Journey of the Child®
Accredited Professional Training
Seeing Beyond Behaviour. Understanding the Whole Child.
Journey of the Child® is an accredited training programme that provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the whole of the child, the world of the child and the journey of the child.
Built around the concept of Disrupted Childhood Development, the training explores how adversity, abuse, neglect, loss, instability, neurodevelopmental differences, prenatal experiences, attachment disruption and trauma shape a child’s development long before behaviour is seen.
At the heart of the programme is the principle of Harm Unseen—recognising that many of the most significant injuries children carry cannot be seen. Whilst physical wounds may heal, the psychological, emotional, developmental and relational impacts of early adversity continue to influence how children experience the world.
Rather than asking:
“What’s wrong with this child?”
Journey of the Child® encourages professionals to ask:
- What has happened?
- What has been disrupted?
- What harm remains unseen?
- What does this child need to recover, heal and Sur*Thrive?
A Different Lens
Children do not begin their journey at birth. Their development is influenced long before behaviour is seen—through genetics, pre-conception and prenatal experiences, transgenerational trauma and adversity, neurodevelopment, attachment, relationships and the environments in which they grow.
Children’s experiences begin long before birth. Genetics, pre-conception and prenatal influences, transgenerational trauma, relationships, adversity and neurodevelopment all shape how children experience and navigate the world, their sense of self, psychological safety, communication, behaviour and developmental progression.
Journey of the Child® helps practitioners move beyond behaviour-led practice by understanding the child’s developmental journey and recognising patterns of need before they become crisis. It provides a practical framework for anticipating need, strengthening psychological safety and creating the conditions for recovery, healing and Sur*Thrival.
Why This Training Matters
Children cannot recover simply because they are now safe.
Recovery depends on adults recognising Harm Unseen—the developmental, emotional and neurobiological impacts of adversity that continue to influence every aspect of a child’s life.
Journey of the Child® supports professionals to understand the Sur*Thrival needs of children and young people, recognising that meaningful recovery begins long before crisis. Through early understanding, anticipation and informed intervention, practitioners can create environments that promote safety, connection, resilience and lifelong wellbeing.
The programme also recognises that children do not recover in isolation. Parents, carers and professionals require the knowledge, confidence and practical frameworks to understand and respond to children’s needs before families reach crisis. Supporting the adults around the child is fundamental to supporting the child themselves.
